Sketches of Holland
Augustus J.C. Hare toured the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Norway in 1884, and sketched what he saw.
It was more the desire of seeing something of the whole country than anything else, […] which took us up from Zwolle, through Friesland, the cow-paradise, to Leeuwarden, its ancient capital. Sad and gloomy as most other towns of Holland are, Leeuwarden is sadder and gloomier still. Its streets are wide and not otherwise than handsome, but they are almost deserted, and there are no objects of interest to see unless a leaning tower can be called so, with a top, like that at Pisa, inclined the other way, to keep it from toppling over.
