The Internet works about this for me:

I happen to read about a topic online – in this case an in memoriam of the British poet Thom Gunn – look for more newspaper articles via Google News, and try to find out if any of his poems can be found somewhere in a parallel search.

Then I will come accross references of his death in a weblog, or this time through Metafilter. Someone there says Thom Gunn had an influence of the writing of Oliver Sacks. This poster actually mentioned this in a long profiel of Sacks, as maybe the only one around.

So, now I am lead off of the Gunn track, and reading about Sacks. Whom I know a bit better, because I have several of his books.

Thom Gunn is now dead for me in more than one way.
