Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself
BBC 2 is going to air Adam Curtis’ three part documentary The Power of Nightmares from Wednesday the 20th on. Curtis claims in it that the perceived threat of global terrorism is a politically driven fantasy and al-Qaida an illusion.
As the broadcaster itself has doubts about these claims, they show no trailers for the documentary beforehand.
But, fantasies like these allow politicians great control, as was shown by the Cold War. Even now the archives are open, there’s still no solid proof the USSR really wanted to invade Western Europe.
Drawing historical parallels is dangerous, but it can open one’s eyes for developments in current affairs. I’ll watch, coming Wednesday.
