Reviews, even when they are fine writing in their own right, even when they are wholly, brilliantly true in a deep way, sometimes make the reviewer look shabby and denuded, his pants at his ankles, his naked knees aquiver. They reveal the reviewer’s weird tics, psychosexual hang-ups, and class limitations. And the reviews that are so beautiful, that are so true, such animated creatures that they don’t pants the reviewer in that way? Those really aren’t reviews at all. They’re just writing.
