Although we’re obsessed about Brexit and Donald Trump’s Twitter feed, the stuff that really matters is what are Turkey’s relationships going to be with Iraq, Iran and Saudi? How’s Russia engaging with Iran, central Asia and China? What’s China’s economic and foreign policy in the Belt and Road initiative? So the point is not to say that the Silk Roads are rising and bringing back the glories of the past. It’s to say this has always been the engine room of global affairs and that’s the same today, as I suspect it will be tomorrow.
