Diamond and Fish
Jason Diamond’s books about what changes societies and cultures are thought provoking; even though they often don’t give more than a Reader’s Digest view of what historians think about the topic at hand. And sometimes they do not do even that.
Diamond has published a new one, called Collapse, that is about why societies destroy themselves. The book is reviewed here by Malcolm Gladwell.
The writer lectured about the topic as well.
Big question that comes forward though is: was fish eating really a taboo for the Norse settlers on Greenland? How come it is so easy to find proof that it wasn’t?
Or was fish eating just a taboo for the higher echelons, and was their way of living not sustainable anymore?
