White Towels
I have been studying the difference
between solitude and loneliness,
telling the story of my life
to the clean white towels taken warm from the dryer.
I carry them through the house
as though they were my children
asleep in my arms.Richard Jones

I don’t remember where I read it, but someone complained American poems are often too long. Mostly, because they’re telling anecdotes, instead of aiming for compact poetic power.
I agree with that. However, when the poem tells some good anecdotes it can never be too long. Richard Jones’s ‘Letter Of Recommendation From My Father to My Future Wife‘ happens to be such a poem, I reckon.
