We’re living under what Mill called a “tyranny of prevailing opinion”, of stifling conformism and suffocating consensus, all kept in order by “means other than civil penalties”, as Mill said. But this tyranny is only as powerful as we allow it to be. It is parasitical on people’s willingness to silence themselves and to bend their knee to the new personal, highly individualised blasphemy laws. We can smash it by being brave and risking social ostracism through saying what we truly believe, regardless of what little god it pisses off.
