TLM: Cybernetics and Ghosts

De eerste tekst in de bundel The Literature Machine is éen van de langste, en ook minst makkelijk leesbare van allemaal. ‘Cybernetics and Ghosts’ was een lezing die Calvino eind 1967 verschillende malen hield over de toen spelende vraag of ‘de auteur’ niet dood was, onder meer. Want bestond wel heel veel aan een verhaal niet gewoon uit bekende elementen, die enkel maar aantrekkelijk gerangschikt hoefden te worden?
De vormeisen die een lezing heeft, die zo anders zijn dan waaraan een essay moet voldoen, maken dit tot een vervelende leestekst. De omhaal van woorden is soms te groot — daar waar Calvino in romans anders zo’n minimalist kon zijn.
Wel staat net in deze lezing het citaat dat de titel zou opleveren voor heel dit boek over literatuur:
Literature is a combinatorial game that pursues the possibilities implicit in its own material, independent of the personality of the poet, but it is a game that at a certain point is invested with an unexpected meaning, a meaning that is not patent on the linguistic plane on which we are working but has slipped in from another level, activating something that om that second level is of great concern to the author or his society. The literature machine can perform all the permutations possible on a given material, but the poetic result will be the particular effect of one of those permutations on a man endowed with a conscious and an unconscious, that is, an empirical and historical man. It will be the shock that only occurs if the writing machine is surrounded by the hidden ghosts of the individual and of his society.
