Manufacturing Dissent

In the same week that the Project of excellence in journalism concludes weblogs can easily be abused to spread propaganda, British thinktank Demos says even the regular newsmedia are already exploited by protest movements.

Instead of simply reporting dissent, the media is starting to manufacture it.

Behind all this a simple wish for attention. The media want to attrack viewers or readers, the protesters need a public and to get noticed by the government. The result is that relatively small groups of people become capable of influencing the public opinion, especially on single issues.

Interesting. And yet another sign journalists are still too unaware of the big value of attention.
