Toeval was het, dat ik allereerst weer geïnteresseerd raakte in Russell door een citatenboek. Maar een punt is nu wel, na ook twee andere van zijn boeken gelezen te hebben, dat veel in zijn betogen inmiddels verouderd is. Hij richt zich dan tot een publiek dat zo niet meer bestaat. De stukken in dit boek dateren bijvoorbeeld merendeels uit de jaren dertig van de twintigste eeuw; en toen lag de wereld er anders bij.

En dan blijven inderdaad vooral citaten over van de teksten. Want, Bertrand Russell blijft absoluut goed voor heldere gedachte hier, en een goed geformuleerd inzicht daar.

Unpopular Essays is een polemisch boek. Maar de strijd gaat daarin vooral tegen vijanden die inmiddels meestal onder hun eigen irrationaliteit bezweken zijn. Het Marxisme, het blinde Socialisme. Het Christendom. De Rassenleer. Elke overtuiging die de ene groep mensen laat denken dat ze beter zijn dan anderen krijgt in het boek van onder uit de zak.

Enkele titels van essays luiden dan ook: ‘An Outline of Intellectual Rubbish’, en ‘Ideas That Have Harmed Mankind’.

Dus tekende ik eens een citaat hier aan, en dan weer daar, omdat Russell tegen mij niet hoefde te preken. Het is alleen dodelijk voor een boek om het telkens eens te zijn met de auteur, en al heel lang te weten waarom hij gelijk heeft.

Philosophers, for the most part, are constitutionally timid, and dislike the unexpected. Few of them would be genuinely happy as pirates or burglars. Accordingly they invent systems which make the future calculable, at least in its main outlines. [74]

Philosophy is a stage in intellectual development, and is not compatible with intellectual maturity. [77]

Dogma demands authority, rather than intelligent thought, as the source of opinion; it requires persecution of heretics and hostility to unbelievers; it asks of its disciples that they should inhibit natural kindliness in favour of systematic hatred. [33]

I do not think that the learned men of my acquaintance, even when they enjoy a secure income, are as happy as the mice that eat the crumbs from their table while the erudite gentlemen snooze. In this respect, therefore, I am not convinced there has been any progress at all. [162-163]

The whole philosophy of economic nationalism, which is now universal throughout the world, is based upon the false belief that the economic interest of one nation is necessarily opposed to that of another. [199]
