Pastoral ~ Nevil Shute

► door: A.IJ. van den Berg

Reading this book was escapism again, of course. But, Nevil Shute is a good storyteller. And what is nowadays sold as literature often lacks just that; a well told story. This book used to be my favourite Shute in my teens, and it’s clear to see why. It tells a plausible and moving love story; though the mores have changed a lot since then.

But, most remarkable about Pastoral was that it showed how boring warfare often is. There were often days between the air raids on Germany and Italy, so the crews of the bomber planes really had a lot of spare time. And partly got in trouble because of that.
